A little while back, I had lunch with a senior HR Manager who was contemplating leaving her job after more than 20 years with a large corporation. “I’m having trouble living with the disconnect between what the company claims are its core values, and how it is handling staff relations during this recession.” She went on to describe a litany of incidents, from a service agent who was terminated after revealing she had cancer, to an entire team that was being laid off so that the division director could meet his cost-cutting targets for his performance bonus. Employees have seen a drastic attitude change from their managers. This attitude of ‘Well, be happy you have a job’ is wearing thin. There is going to be a tsunami of job searching once the economy picks up, and some of the most active job hoppers are likely to be HR personnel who are disgusted with how companies have chosen to treat their staff. More than a few people, from both HR and non-HR backgrounds, contacted me directly to applaud my answer and reiterate my observations. In one contact’s words, “a huge changeover in staff is coming, and I don’t think management understands exactly how deep into the organization this discontent has spread.” If you are considering making a career change once the economy picks up, be proactive. Don’t wait for a “tipping point” incident. Take control now by mapping out your career plans for the next six months to two years and equipping your job search arsenal. Here are some tips: Take some time to think about your personal and professional values. I can’t emphasize the importance of this enough. It is much easier to figure out whether a new company or position is going to be a good fit for you if you are really clear about what is important to you. Go through your files and start collecting the material for your resume: projects, positive feedback, performance reviews, KPI reports, anything that you can use to support your success stories. Define your value proposition â€" what are the key strengths, expertise and experience that you have to offer. Investigate companies that you would like to work for. Go beyond the financials. Instead of running that risk, use specific relevant examples that show the firing as a good management decision for the benefit of the company and/or your team. Although these interviewed employees did not always have access to all the facts, many strongly suspected that their male counterparts received significantly more money and respect than they did.According to the study, thirty-eight percent of female workers said they feel they are paid less than male counterparts with the same skills and experience, up from 34 percent in 2008 when the survey was last conducted, and up fr om 31 percent in 2003.Also, the nagging feeling of injustice is not limited to paychecks. An even greater number of women think that men have more career advancement opportunities within their organizations. Women were also likely to feel like men were more frequently recognized for their achievements. A little praise and gratitude can go a long way, but apparently, women are expected to continue along without the same amount of recognition.Women suspected that among the reasons men were more likely to receive better positions was because men sought after bonding with management. The largest companies ($5 billion or more in revenue) are most likely to apply technology in accounting and finance tasks. Many firms also expect to automate processes such as financial planning and forecasting.One outcome of accounting automation is increased efficiency. Companies are also consolidating accounts as a result of automation.The benchmarking report shows the number of active general ledger (GL) accounts at companies is trending down slightly, with the largest companies seeing a notable decline in their overall number of GL accounts. Thirty-one percent of firms with $5 billion or more in revenue have fewer than 100 active GL accounts, up from zero percent a year ago.Other technology findingsMicrosoft Excel is still widely used by companies of all sizes for budgeting, planning and analysis, according to the report. Sixty-three percent of U.S. companies rely on Excel, down from 69 percent in 2017.However, as more teams embrace enterprise resource planning (ERP) for budgeting and planning, fewer companies - especially the larger ones - identify Excel as their top tool. The other leading types of business management software include IBM/Cognos, Oracle/Hyperion, SAP Business Planning and Consolidation.Cloud financial solutions also continue to rise. Three-quarters (75 percent) of respondents said they are using either online-based software and services, or they plan to do so in the future. Last year, 72 percent made that claim, compared with 62 percent in 2016.Unlike previous reports, the financial executives interviewed for this years benchmarking survey cited few or no reservations about using cloud technology.
