Being sick in bed can be the right time to finally getting done some of your most under-appreciated tasks. How Do You Choose What To Do? I keep a prioritized to-do list all the time. This living list grows and shrinks every day as items are added and deleted. The harsh reality is that some of the bottom-scraping items will never get done, which might be fine. If they mattered more, they'd be higher up on the list, right? Perhaps, but what about the important stuff you keep delaying?eval Most of the items on my list have dependencies i.e. things without which the items cannot be completed, such as having access to the Internet or being able to leave home. How sick you are will determine how you may be limited regarding your own to-do list's dependencies. Translation: there are items on the list that you temporarily can't complete and should ignore until you're feeling better. As a result, many or the remaining items will move up on the list and into the realm of the doable.eval Pain Hurts. Let It Decide It's true. Feel free to quote me on that one. Over the weekend I caught a case of bronchitis from my baby daughter (that's not her in the picture, my daughter has more baby fat). It was tough to concentrate on anything between the bad sleeping, breathing difficulties and waking-everyone-else coughing. Finally, after visits to each of our doctors yesterday, we started to feel better. By taking into account the above to-do list reduction tip, I still managed to get done quite a few things while sick in bed. Best Things You Can Accomplish While Sick Finishing a book. Whether for pleasure or for work, everyone loves a good book and it's important to read them. If you're like me though, during a busy work week the book reading often gets pushed to the end of the evening, eyes closing on the 3rd or 4th page. Being sick is the time to pick up the pace and end that book. Watching a video tutorial. TV is called the “idiot box” for a reason; you may as well learn something during your slowdown. If you can see your computer well enough from your sofa or bed, check out a site like 5min.com for quick video lessons on anything. Thinking about life. Few people have said it better than Ferris Bueller: “Life goes by pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.” You may have specific to-do list items to mull over (maybe even to increase their priority), or you can just take stock in where you are with your current and long-term projects. Relaxing. Because 81% of people have their best ideas out of the office i.e. when not working. Sleeping. Ok, I doubt this will be on your to-do list, but perhaps if you were sleeping more already then you wouldn't have gotten sick in the first place. Wrap Up Life continues even when you're sick, so keep that in mind and do not simply ‘turn off' because your head hurts or you have a sore throat. Always trying to make the best of a situation means that being sick is a moment to grasp like any other, and you can reap the most benefits by finishing those tasks you weren't doing otherwise. This uncapped time off can be taken at any time, without the need to gain prior approval. The only assumption Sir Richard has made is that the taking of these holidays will not restrict the ability of the company to function and therefore not damage the business in any way. However, Mr Branson is actively encouraging other Virgin companies to follow suit in adopting the scheme. Although the Virgin boss is not the first to offer this innovative holiday procedure to his employees, this is certainly the most high profile case. Other companies would do well to follow Virgins example, as the modern business world needs modern working practices to suit. Modern workplace: The average workplace of today is already quite different to that of years gone by. The idea of the nine to five working day is already in danger of becoming outdated and old-fashioned, with many companies offering their staff the option of home working. Flexible working has also been the subject of a new government rule. According to the rule, all employees who have worked for an employer for 26 weeks or more now have the right to request flexible working hours. Whether a request is granted or not is still in the hands of the employer but the new rules show a commitment to the welfare and general wellbeing of the nations working population. Boost to staff morale The unlimited holiday scheme is just the next step forward in providing autonomy for employees. Many advocates of the scheme point to the huge boost in staff morale as one of the key elements in the provision of unlimited holidays. Go outside or let bright light into your workspace When exposed to bright lights, neurons in our hypothalamus are activated. Hypocretin, a molecule in your brain associated with alertness and staying awake, is created when we are made subject to bright lights, meaning that it could revitalise alertness and fend off feeling tired. Try to make your workspace bright with artificial or, ideally, natural light from the window. Boost your iron intake Lacking iron intake can be a cause of fatigue. Research has concluded that iron deficiencies are linked to cognitive functions such as attention spans. Ensuring that you eat iron rich food as part of a balanced diet could alleviate inattentiveness and feelings of being drained. (Note: If you believe you are experiencing the effects of an iron deficiency, it is definitely worth getting checked out by a doctor!) You’re allowed to take a break! Straining your eyes at a computer screen can exacerbate tiredness. Give your eyes some rest with breaks away your screen. Get active Exercise has shown to have positive effects on energy levels. Those moments, where you think, “Is this what I got my very expensive degree for?” Maybe it’s just that you thought it was going to ‘feel’ better, or ‘be’ different. If so, you’re not alone. Forbes found that a New-York based nonprofit research group, The Conference Board, reports for the last eight years that more than half of Americans are not satisfied in their job role. There are so many factors that could contribute to unhappiness in the workplace. And many times it’s not just one thing. Bad communication with your boss, too much work, not enough support. Sometimes (and so many times) it’s the people you are around daily. There are only so many days a year that one can handle being around the ‘debbie’ downer! It’s hard to stay enthusiastic in the wrong environment or doing a job that doesn’t align with your passion. Sometimes you’re in the right job and in the wrong company. We like to use our skills First, know who you are and what you’re good at. What do you do well? What tasks or things at work make you want to go to your job? These are the things that you are probably good at and your goal is trying to find more and more opportunities to sharpen your best. We tend to find more energy in things we do well than in things that we constantly struggle to accomplish. Finding what you are naturally good at is a fun journey. It can start with a career assessment. We use the DISC assessment and it can help build a framework for you. Skills plus values equals passion Second, what are your values? In what areas do you feel passionately? When you match skill with passion, this can be a very fulfilling direction. So, do you have the skill for creating gorgeous websites and a passion for helping non-profits? Do you have a knack for public speaking and always been drawn to politics? You get the idea! This is a stage where you can dream again. Many times the reasons you are questioning if we are in the right career is because we lost the dream. It became routine. Boring. Not exciting enough. And you stopped dreaming. Follow your instincts to the right opportunities Third, if we have an outline for who we are as well as what we are good at + where our values are, we work in the daily goals that fulfill it. During this process we somehow become open to opportunities that align. I’ve heard stories where clients say, it just sort of happened! or it fell into my lap! Who doesn’t want that? Once we are willing to dream again, the opportunities are there. Seek and ye shall find. Just take the next step Create concrete steps. You just need to do the next step. It is easy to become very overwhelmed with all the information out there, even not motivated to look at your resume and fearful that there isn’t going to be anything else for you. You just need to do the next thing on your list, not plan out your whole life in six sessions or three easy steps. Let me give you an example. A next step could be to call that business friend to set up a coffee meeting. Ask about his or her passions and say what you are thinking in terms of a career change. It could mean researching different graduate programs. It could be emailing someone on Linkedin to connect over lunch. It could mean having a candid conversation with your boss.
